Welcome to Pacific Meadows Alpacas blog for my dubbing fiber!

My name is Pam Bell, owner of Pacific Meadows Alpacas and creator of my custom line of dubbing from alpaca fleece. I have created this blog to introduce the fly tying enthusiasts to the great qualities alpaca fiber offers as a dubbing and encourage you to try some yourself.

All my alpaca fiber is grown on my farm in the foothills of the Pacific Northwest Coast Range. I raise the animals, my brother shears them in the Spring, then I wash and hand dye all the fibers myself.  Nothing is outsourced. Each color is created using eco-friendly, fish friendly color-fast dyes with water from the great McKenzie River!

Alpaca is a naturally buoyant, semi-hollow hair that is very fine yet incredibly durable. It’s natural crimp and sheen makes this fiber sparkle and come alive in the water. Fish cannot resist its incredible swimming action. Alpaca makes great body dubbing or can be used as long strands for streamers. It will fluff a bit when wrapped around the hook, giving a very natural appearance.

I introduced this product in 2009 at the Northwest Fly Tyers Expo in Albany, Oregon. The response was incredible with immediate success as one tyer tried it out on the Santiam River that weekend and several steelhead succumbed to its enticing qualities. April Vokey of Fly Gal Ventures in British Columbia says, “It’s incredible!! I have been tying with your alpaca and I love it!” Dozens of customers have contacted me wanting more, encouraging me to offer it to their local supply store.

I invite you to treat yourself to this premium alpaca dubbing fiber and discover one of nature’s most exciting fly tying secrets! Browse through the colors below (listed in August posts as well as July posts) to find something your dubbing kit is in need of.
